Baby Sleeping Bags FAQ

When can my baby start wearing an inika baby sleeping bag?

We recommend that babies do not use the Petite size inika baby sleeping bag until they are at least 10 lbs. For most babies, this is around the age of 6-8 weeks, when babies become a little more active and outgrow the need for swaddling. The Petite model fits babies up to 6 months of age. The Grande model is designed for ages 6-18 months.

When can the inika baby sleeping bags be worn?

The Petite B and Grande models contain a light polyester filling, making it ideal for year round usage. The Petite A model contains a plusher polyester filling, making it appropriate for colder winter temperatures. Controlling the temperature of the nursery and the clothes your baby wears to sleep will also ensure that she is comfortable.

Why are the inika baby sleeping bags sleeveless?

The inika baby sleeping bags are sleeveless to ensure proper circulation and to prevent overheating (babies sleeping under baby blankets often sleep with their arms outside). Overheating increases the risk of apnea, which can lead to SIDS in some babies. For cooler weather, your baby can be kept warm by wearing a long-sleeved pajama top or sleeper.

Why are the inika baby sleeping bags so long?

The inika baby sleeping bags are designed to be long, so that your baby has plenty of opportunity to practice his motor skills. Babies can kick and play in their inika baby sleeping bag in the same way they like to kick off blankets, but never become uncovered.

Why is the side zipper with the shoulder snaps only available in the Petite size?

The side/bottom zip and shoulder snaps allow the inika baby sleeping bag to be opened up flat. These features enable easy middle-of-the-night diaper changes for young babies. Older and more active babies, however, may undo the shoulder snaps and slip in or out of their sleeping bag. Without shoulder snaps, a front zipper still allows for easy diaper changes. The front zipper is also inverted, making it hard for your baby to unzip the sleeping bag on their own.

How can I keep my baby from getting too hot or too cold while wearing the inika baby sleeping bag?

You can keep your baby comfortable by controlling the temperature of your baby's nursery and what your baby is wearing under the inika baby sleeping bag. Health professionals recommend a baby's nursery be set at a room temperature of 16-21 °C / 61- 70 °F . You can check the temperature of your baby with the back of your hand on your baby's arms, trunk, or nape of the neck. Do not check your baby's hand or feet, as these are usually cooler than the rest of his body because of an immature circulatory system. If baby feels sweaty, take a layer of clothing off. If he's cool, add a layer of clothing or turn up the thermostat. If a young baby seems extremely cold, warm him up first before adding another layer of clothing. His body can't produce enough heat to rewarm him even if he has a lot of covering.
